The exciting 5150 Triathlon Series (pronounced “Fifty-One Fifty”) was launched by World Endurance Sports Group (also known as the WTC or World Triathlon Corporation) in 2010 to fill the void for a global standard distance triathlon series in a non-drafting format. The event offers the opportunity for mass participation in a manageable race distance.
The series takes the format of the standard or international distance triathlon which was put together by the fusion of three free standing Olympic events into one triathlon. (1500m open water swim, 40km cycling time trial and 10km road run). This happened back in 1989. Since 2000 this racing distance has been taken into the Olympics, with the alteration that the cycling leg became draft legal.
The new 5150 global triathlon series is based on the same principles, ethos and philosophy of the World Endurance Sports Group’s legendary Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events.
The name 5150 is based on a simple add up sum: 1.5km swim + 40km cycle + 10km run = 51.50km.
We envision a series of 5150 races in South Africa and 2011 saw the roll out of one 5150 at Forever Resorts Warmbaths in Bela Bela, primarily serving Gauteng and the adjacent provinces. A coastal 5150 will follow, and thereafter a 5150 African Champs. We are doing this in a sustainable and responsible manner over a period of time; hence each race will have to make sense in all aspects of the word, before the next one will be rolled out. It is therefore difficult and unfair to provide definite time lines in this process.
5150 triathlon brings home a world class global non drafting Olympic distance triathlon to professional and recreational triathletes alike. More information can be obtained on the global 5150 website: www.5150.com/
